For completeness its relatively safe (although not recommended as a
regular usage pattern) to shoot cast somewhere in the middle. The big
caveat is dont do it while its installing something. In general, dont
do it unless you have to, but its not going to be the end of the world.

If you have an install queue (you're doing a system-update or cast
--queue, etc.) then the queue should have things removed as you go
(although i may be wrong). If thats the case then recasting --queue
will only cast the things that are left.

ctrl-c will leave a source directory in /usr/src, which you may delete
or on a recast its removed for you. locks are left hanging, however the
locking code is usually smart enough to deal with stale locks.
