If you can get a basic system running using gentoo (or any other
distro), you might want to look into LFS, since they build in a chroot
environment to become selfhosting. Also look at
http://wiki.sourcemage.org/index.php?page=Install+using+chroot+and+rsync
and http://wiki.sourcemage.org/index.php?page=FunWithChroot .

If you put enough of the basesystem into the chroot, you should be
able to install sorcery on it and rebuild. Then setup the system to
boot with the partition you chrooted as /. From there on it should
simply be a question of getting the alpha specifics built.
