Are you using gcc-3.3?
gcc changed some stuff(important stuff too) and is "too smart for it's own
good". Searching kernel mailing lists shows developers are aware, have
implemented changes to 2.5.XX tree and are backporting to 2.4.XX tree.
Support for gcc-3.3 will return with 2.4.21 (apparently). i am using
2.4.21-rc2 and only one line needs changing to compile.
if you aren't using gcc-3.3 then send this email to /dev/null
