Hey guys,
had the same problem and tracked it down to pango 1.0.5 not behaving
properly with Xft2. pango 1.1.3 doesn't have this problem though... check
out bugs 1587 and 1649 for further help:

Upgrading pango did the trick for me. One little note: bumping the
version number to 1.1.3 isn't enough, you need to change the 2.0 in
SOURCE_URL[0] to 2.1 (thanks again to cat in IRC!)
