New Jamun Variety Konkan Bahadoli .

KVK Babhaleshwar has procured the new variety of Jamun (Syzigium cuminii Skeels) named Konkan Bahadoli. The variety has been recommended by Dr Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Dapoli and released during the year 2004.

The variety was released by the Regional Fruit Research Station, Vengurla. The variety is a selection from local Jamun trees that grows in Bahaduli village in Palghar Tehsil of Thane District. The jamun trees were brought to this Vaitarna river basin from Badlapur by the local farmers of Bahadoli 30 to 40 years before and the trees established in this Vaitarna basin. The fruit is large 25-28 g with maximum pulp content(83.3%). On an average per kg weight has 40-50 fruits. Weight of the seed is 3.7g.

About 70-80% seed obtained is polyembryonic which means these polyembryonically grown seedlings are 100% true to its mother plants and hence even seedlings separated from these polyembryonic seedlings can be utilized for further plantation.

A bout 3-4 seedlings grow from each seed. By and large taller and vigorous plants are male while small and less vigorous are female plants. The plants comes to bearing in 3-4 years after grafting while seedling grown plants come to bearing stage at 7-8 years age.
