Some early works by Selman A. Waksman are:

Humus: Origin, Chemical Composition and Importance in Nature
Williams and Wilkins, 1938

Principles of Soil Microbiology
London: Bailliere, Tindall and Cox, 1927

Soil Microbiology
New York: Wiley, 1951, 1957

A search on the keyword "humus" at

http://www.bookfinder.com
brings up among others

Humus Chemistry: Genesis, Composition, Reactions
F. J. Stevenson
Wiley, 1982, 1994

Plant Litter: Decompostion, Humus Formation, Carbon Sequestration
Bjorn Berg
Springer, 2013

Both are in print and expensive both new and used which should tell us
something.

A search on the keywords "soil organic matter" gives several titles,
notably

Soil Organic Matter: Its Nature, Its Role in Soil Formation and in Soil
Fertility
M. M. Kononova
Pergamon Press, 1961

I expect These should be fairly widely available in university
libraries and on inter-library loan.
