I hope many of you here will join everyone in the followup list, SUSTAGNET,
as SANET draws to a close.
We are all lucky to have Andy on board as list owner. I look forward to
many more years of innovative sustainable agriculture discussion there.

Dear SANET and the sustainable ag community,

SANET has played an outsized role in the sustainable agriculture movement
for the last 28+ years. Many thanks to the sustainable agriculture
community for making SANET the forum for practical information,
discussion, debate and activism around the movement! The people in
sustainable agriculture are the best!

SANET was my early support system, as a bright-eyed, idealistic graduate
student in a land-grant university where I was told that “that
sustainable/organic ag stuff will never work.” I was so happy to find this
community and to interact with like-minded folks all across the country,
and the world! There were a lot of people out there interested in and
working to implement sustainable practices! SANET sustained me during those
early, grad school years, as did the SARE community that funded my graduate
work in cover crops.

Thanks are due to the USDA-SARE program (Sustainable Agriculture Research
and Education Program <https://www.sare.org/>) for its support of SANET
over these many years, some of them moderately tumultuous…. I will repeat
the thanks to Kevin Gamble at NCSU for his vision and technical support in
setting up this list. He also helped develop the first SARE website. Both
were ahead of their time.

Thanks, too, to Jill Auburn and others on the original Sustainable
Agriculture Network steering committee. The concept of such a network
originally came out of UC Davis from Jill and others, who contributed for
many more years to a vision for sustainable agriculture and for sustainable
agriculture communications. (Jill, of course, was also SARE director for 10
years). SARE had been funding research for several years. How best to get
that great information into the field? SANET was an important vehicle for
doing that, especially in the early years. Thanks to Rob Hedberg, current
SARE director, for his continued support and tolerance over the last ~ 10
years.

Then, of course, I landed my first real job after graduate school and post
doc work --- with SARE! --- and spent the next 23 years communicating the
results of SARE research to the sustainable agriculture community. SANET
was a small part of that work, but still an incredibly vibrant community
all working to improve the sustainability of agriculture. We have made huge
strides, but the work is not done.

I hope that you will all join sustagnet (
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/sustagnet), and encourage your
colleagues to do so as well. I would like to see it continue to be the
place to go for practical information, discussion and debate about
sustainable agriculture. Thank you Larry London for taking this on. I
retired from SARE last summer, but I have agreed to work with Larry to
manage sustagnet. I look forward to many more years of lively discussion!
Please be respectful!

Andy Clark
