*THE HISTORY OF SEEDBOMBS- A STORY FROM ANCIENT TO CONTEMPORARY.*

MASANOBU FUKUOKA
JAPANESE HISTORY
*SEEDBOMBS ORIGINATED IN JAPAN AND ARE AN ANCIENT TECHNIQUE CALLED*
Tsuchi Dango (粘土団子,土団子,土だんご*) WHICH MEANS 'EARTH DUMPLING' THEY
WERE REINTRODUCED BY JAPANESE MICROBIOLOGIST MASANOBU FUKUOKA IN 1938. *
FUKUOKA <http://fukuokafarmingol.info/>* PIONEERED THE WORLD OF SUSTAINABLE
AGRICULTURE BY INITIATING 'NATURAL FARMING' A PHILOSOPHY WHEREBY
GARDENING TECHNIQUES DO NOT INCLUDE WEEDING, PESTICIDES, FERTILIZERS OR
TILLING...MOTHER NATURE IS LEFT TO TAKE CARE OF THE SEEDS WE SOW AND SHE
DECIDES WHICH CROPS TO PROVIDE US WITH.*

*IN 1975 FUKUOKA AUTHORED AN INSPIRATIONAL AND ICONIC BOOK CALLED 'THE
ONE-STRAW REVOLUTION'
*AND MOST RECENT 'SOWING SEEDS IN THE DESERT'

*"Many people think that when we practice agriculture, nature is helping us
in our efforts to grow food. This is an exclusively
human-centered viewpoint... we should instead, realize that we are
receiving that which nature decides to give us. A farmer does not grow
something in the sense that he or she creates it. That human is only a
small part of the whole process by which nature expresses its being. The
farmer has very little influence over that process... other than being
there and doing his or her small part."* Quote Masanobu Fukuoka

CONTEMPORARY SEEDBOMBING!
NATURE HAS A DESIRE TO MAKE THE UGLY BEAUTIFUL
'SEEDBOMBING IS A TERM THAT HAS BEEN USED SINCE THE 1970's WHICH IS WHEN
THE GUERRILLA GARDENING MOVEMENT WAS BEGINNING.

*In NYC IN THE 1970's A GROUP OF GARDEN ACTIVISTS CALLED THE 'GREEN
GUERRILLAS' FOUNDED BY ARTIST LIZ CHRISTY THREW SEEDBOMBS IN ABANDONED LOTS
AND WASTELAND AND SUBSEQUENTLY BECAME THE CREATORS AND FOUNDERS OF THE
BOWERY HOUSTON COMMUNITY GARDEN <http://www.lizchristygarden.us/>WHICH IS
STILL AN ACTIVE COMMUNITY GARDEN TO THIS DAY AND HAS RECEIVED THE SUPPORT
AND CREDIBILITY FROM LOCAL GOVERNMENT TO PRESERVE IT AS A COMMUNITY GROWING
SPACE. *

*SINCE THEN THERE HAVE BEEN MANY TYPES OF SEEDBOMB INVENTIONS: SOME WERE
MADE OF CONDOMS OR BALLOONS FILLED WITH WATER, FERTILIZER AND WILDFLOWER
SEEDS AND SOME WERE EVEN MADE FROM CHRISTMAS BAUBLES FILLED WITH COMPOST
AND SEEDS! BUT MOST GUERRILLA GARDENERS PREFER TO USE THE ANCIENT METHODS
AND USE NATURAL MATERIALS LIKE THAT USED BY MASONOBU FUKUOKA WHOSE RECIPE
WAS ENTIRELY NATURAL MADE FROM EARTH CLAY AND SEEDS. SOME GARDENERS LIKE
MYSELF LIKE TO BE INVENTIVE AND CREATE THEIR OWN RECIPES BASED ON HOMEMADE
COMPOST AND GREEN MANURE. ONE OF THE THINGS I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED ABOUT MY
SEEDBOMBING EXPERIENCE IS THE LEARNING THROUGH EXPERIMENTING AND THERES
NOTHING LIKE IT WHEN YOU SEE SHOOTS APPEARING FROM THE 'EARTH WOMB' YOU
HAVE PROVIDED FOR YOUR SEEDS...SO I WOULD SUGGEST AS A 'CONTEMPORARY'
GUERRILLA GARDENER..EXPERIMENT WITH YOUR OWN RECIPES, PLANT COMBINATIONS
AND REMEMBER TO BE SITE SPECIFIC WITH YOUR PLANT CHOICES.*
