There is a unique, interesting job available at a model,
magnet, public high school in Salcedo, Dominican Republic, called the Liceo
Cientifico Dr. Miguel Canela Lazaro. http://www.liceocientifico.org/.
Please check the video on the website:  They are looking for an expert
farmer-gardener
to produce all of the school’s vegetables, fruits, and also eggs and other
animal products – in an organic, sustainable fashion.

The school has large gardening areas (about .5 acre), a
commercial-sized greenhouse, about an acre of mixed fruit and other trees
planted several years ago by the Ministry of Agriculture, and pasture areas.
The
soil is typical Cibao Valley – dark and fertile. At the moment very little of
this space is being used productively, because this position is new and
unfilled. This is not an agriculture school, but does have a strong focus on
sustainability and ecology.

The director of the school is Puerto Rican, has a PhD from
Columbia University, and speaks fluent English. There are teachers from eight
different countries as well as Dominican teachers. The school is experimental
and the only school of its kind in the DR.

You would:
·         Have a lot of freedom to design the land and
decide production methods in consultation with school staff.
·         Be paid approx. US$1,190 / month. (This goes a
long way in the Dominican Republic).
·         Work five days a week.
·         Farm and garden manually in the hot, humid
tropical climate
·         Give direction and receive help from two Spanish-only-speaking
gardeners and one maintenance person.
·         Integrate students into farm/garden tasks when
possible
·         Find housing in town.

Ideal candidates
should:
·         Be able to firmly commit to the position for at
least one year
·         Speak Spanish
·         Be able to plan and carry out work independently
·         Have extensive work experience in organic
farming, gardening, horticulture and/or permaculture
·         Have experience in the above in a tropical
setting or a developing world setting
·         Understand that Salcedo is not a beach town!
(it’s 1.5 hrs by private car or 3 hrs by public transport to the nearest
beach).

Who am I? I am an organic farmer, certified (3x)
Permaculture designer and Peace Corps Volunteer; soon to leave the DR after
two
years in a different community; was invited to take this position but can’t
due
to other plans. The director has asked me look for qualified candidates for
this position and to vet them before putting them in touch with him. Please
send me an email at eric_broberg (at) hotmail.com detailing why you are
qualified for this position and including a resume of relevant work/education
experience. Please only apply if you can commit to spending a year at the job.
Include any questions about the school or job in your email.
