Neither is John. He's a biologist.

That would be fine except that this is a physical universe and we are
biological organisms, which suggests that consciousness requires a
neurological infrastructure (at least for living organisms - it may not
be true for no longer living ones however, and I'm not quite sure about
those still unborn, or organisms without brains).
