GELT Permaculture Design Certificate Course

Date: June 7 - June 20, 2010
Highland Park, Michigan
We are offering a limited number of spaces last minute to participants who
would like to support the GELT program by getting your Permaculture Design
Certificate concurrently with our GELT program participants.
This summer, one neighborhood in Highland Park will begin the process of
becoming a self-reliant neighborhood block. Participants in GELT (Green
Economy Leadership Training), a program of Global Exchange, will spend nine
weeks learning green technology skills, permaculture and leadership skills
and apply their new knowledge working side-by-side with residents of the
block to begin the transition to self-reliance.
Members of GELT will work to install gardens, install solar energy systems,
weatherize 150 homes in the neighborhood and throughout Highland Park, learn
leadership skills and build bonds within the neighborhood and the city that
we hope will see them come back to work in the area, if not move into the
area, or take their skills home to facilitate positive changes there.
The GELT program will begin with a two-week permaculture design certificate
course in recognition of the vital role that systemic planning for
sustainable habitats will play as society moves forward into the uncharted
landscape formed by the convergence of climate, economic and energy
challenges. The intent is that trainees will graduate the program with skills
that will allow them to participate in, and take leadership roles within, the
green economy and a perspective reflecting the need for truly sustainable,
systemic designs for our homes, neighborhoods, towns, cities, and beyond.
This PDC will have a strong urban permaculture focus as GELT participants
will be tasked from the beginning with designing a sustainable neighborhood
in Highland Park, Michigan. Highland Park and the surrounding city of Detroit
are perfectly poised to transform themselves into the greenest urban area in
the United States. Empty lots, idle hands, a low median income and a vibrant
urban gardening community makes the area an ideal place to study the
application of urban agriculture within a context of sustainability.

What is permaculture? It's a system for integrated design using the rhythms
and designs of the natural world resulting in integrated, healthy,
sustainable communities.

The Permaculture Design Certificate course is an internationally-recognized,
seventy-two hour course resulting in a Permaculture Design Certificate. It
provides an introduction to permaculture design as set forth by movement
founder Bill Mollison. The course is taught by a team of local
permaculturists.
The course covers sustainable living systems for a wide variety of landscapes
and climates. It includes the application of permaculture principles to food
production, home design, construction, energy conservation and generation,
and explores alternative economic structures and legal strategies supporting
permaculture solutions.

The foundation for this course is A Permaculture Designer's Manual by Bill
Mollison, which is included in the cost of the course tuition.
PRI-De is proud to have been invited to provide Permaculture Design
Certification to participants in the nine-week GELT program, and is proud to
be part of a team including Global Exchange, WARM Training Center, the City
of Highland Park, Zaida and St. Matthew's Baptist Church, bringing this
much-needed training to the Detroit Metro area.
