I'm delurking to send a pointer to Sharon Astyk's most recent post on
permaculture, which I think anyone associated with that movement, no matter
how loosely, should read and think about:

http://sharonastyk.com/2009/06/29/permaculture-future-questions-perhaps-worth-asking-part-i/

My intention is not to start a donnybrook, but more to open up the
conversation to some of the objections and concerns that Astyk is raising
here. This resonated with me, since I find myself in just about the same
place as Astyk: highly sympathetic to the goals and methods of permaculture
as a set of practices, but less enamoured of the way permaculture fits in to
the surrounding culture. And less certain that it will fare well if social
change starts going turbulent anytime soon. (Also, I haven't gone through a
PDC, although I would love to if I could get life to slow down for long
enough.)

Some readers might find the post to be too USA-centric, whic is
understandable. Nevertheless, I suspect that permaculture has a roughly
similar social standing in most or all of the countries where it operates.
Like Astyk, I see permaculture as a set of hugely promising resources for
the times ahead. And I'd hate to see those resources squandered through bad
PR and elitism (even if unintended).
