I wanted to let people know about an opportunity to take the Transition
Training workshop being offered in Ann Arbor, MI, Jan 31st-Feb1st  being
taught by Michael Brownlee and Lynette Hanthorn of Transition Boulder.  The
website for registration and more info is:
  http://tinyurl.com/mit4t.

Transition has been mentioned on this list before, but just in case: the
Transition movement was started by permaculturist Rob Hopkins in Ireland and
the U.K. as a response to the twin challenges of climate change and oil
depletion (or "the end of cheap energy") and involves a community coming
together to vision what their town could look like in a low-carbon,
relocalized future.  It's an extremely comprehensive and positive grassroots
approach covering local food, economy, healthcare, renewable energy,
education, etc.

There are now Transition Initiatives starting all over the world, including
many in the U.S.  The training event is meant to immerse attendees in what a
transition initiative feels like, and give them the tools to start an
initiative in their community.  This is the first training offered in the
midwest and we want to make it available to as many communities as possible
throughout the region.  If you are interested in Transition or in starting an
initiative in your area, this is for you!

Here are a few good websites with more on Transition:

Hope to see you there!

Dear Jennifer,
As a 13th generation Floridian I tip my hat to you. We were the first farmers
to settle in St.Augustine. My mom just moved to LA where I teach sustainable
design, but to start in Florida where man has screwed up so much, this is
wonderful. There's so much to do with so many people not on the same page of
permaculture. I wish you all well and great to hear someone is doing it,Yahoo
Regards,
Ray

Hey Folks,

Happy New Year!

I'm spearheading a face-to-face meetup of people in
Central Florida who are interested in
permaculture/sustainability. It's happening this
Monday night, January 5, at 7pm in Orlando. The venue
is Hamburger Mary's Bar and Grill at 110 West Church
St. in downtown Orlando. (I chose this location
because it's central, and they've hosted other Meetups
and can handle big groups.)

If you'd like to join me, RSVP by visiting the
following link:

http://www.meetup.com/The-Orlando-Permaculture-Meetup-Group/

Although I live in Texas, I spend several weeks a year
in Orlando for work, and am eager to connect with
permies there and contribute to creating sustainable
community.

Even if you can't make it to the meeting this time,
please drop by the website and introduce yourself if
you're interested in future face-to-face Meetups.

All the best, and hope to see some Central Florida
Permies this Monday!

Nicholas: A book I found quite helpful in understanding how money is
created by the Federal Reserve and the circular relationship of debt,
interest and inflation is "The Web of Debt" by Ellen Hodgson Brown. Get the
2008 edition. No diagrams, but some easy to understand explanations that
will have you re-examining what you think you know about money.
