  • Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2008 09:07:00 -0700 (PDT)

Just when you thought there was enough junk in your home, there's a junkyard
tour to help stop the stream of waste to over seas. This one will teach you
what to buy that lasts for ever and can be used for sustainability in your
life. I'll show you where I go to buy special metals and weird shapes that
can be put to good use. You'll find things you've never seen before and
places you'd never go unless you join us. We'll be all together in one cool
school bus which will be how we'll get around as a group someday on a regular
basis.

When: June 7th 9:00 AM
Where: 3983 East Blvd.Mar Vista, CA 90066
What to bring: Gloves to rummage with and lunch.
How much:$25 per person (10 people max)

Things we are looking for:
rooftop growing bends
radar dishes for solar cookers
water catchment and grey water parts
metal trellis parts for growing food
Burningman art projects
Water Woman sustainable art projects
Rocket stove and hot tub parts
The gut impulse purchase and must have items
Collecting fun parts for Sara's furniture
misc.

Call:424-228-4797 to confirm, anyone wanting to drive there cars would be
fine.

Look forward to big laughs,
Ray

Thanks Lawrence and JK for posting on Deming. While Deming didn't get
much regard during his lifetime in the US, years after his passing much
traces back in large part to his work that shows up in both Japanese
and US management - Total Quality Management (TQM), Continuous Process
Improvement, etc. While this is a corporate culture phenomenon, I
wonder how it might apply to Permaculture - perhaps if or as Permie
practices grow in acceptance and application, and more people,
organizations and communities might get involved.

Any one with thoughts on connections to the ol' family farm?

Good man. We need a few more.
William Edwards Deming (October 14, 1900-December 20, 1993) was an American
statistician, college professor, author, lecturer, and consultant. Deming is
widely credited with improving production in the United States during World
War II, although he is perhaps best known for his work in Japan. There, from
1950 onward he taught top management how to improve design (and thus
service), product quality, testing and sales (the last through global
markets)[1] through various methods, including the application of
statistical methods. Deming made a significant contribution to Japan's
later
renown for innovative high-quality products and its economic power. He is
regarded as having had more impact upon
Japanese manufacturing and business
than any other individual not of Japanese heritage. Despite being considered
something of a hero in Japan, he was only beginning to win widespread
recognition in the U.S. at the time of his death. THAT WAS A SHAME!

More than four in 10 Tokyo residents -- 41.6 percent -- said they "don't want
to sacrifice a convenient lifestyle to prevent global warming," ... However,
the poll showed that nearly 90 percent of Tokyo residents feel
threatened by global warming. They also came tops in responding that
"environmental protection is more important than economic growth."

AOTA

All of the above would apply to a family farm seriously interested in
production and economic success (it survives,
is able to sustain itself indefinitely materially as well as financially).
The financial par would imply that it would have the ability to weather
market forces and operating costs
and would be able to scale its market niche more and more to local sources. A
microcosm of such farms could form
overlapping networks to provide goods locally and regionally. Access common
resources such as marketing coops and
equipment and materials pools would help this work in a big way.

There's lots to say about this and how Deming's ideas could be put to work on
a small farm. Its kind of in the
AGOTO Dept. to say that his ideas would be useful in that context (amazing
grasp of the obvious dept.)

"Cross-functional process management Attain, maintain, improve standards"
would seem to be principles directly
appliocable to the practice of permaculture and the developmet of
permaculture systems on a property or farm.
