COPPICE WORKSHOP
June 14 & 15
9:00 am to 4:00 pm both days

Coppicing is a system of traditional sustainable forestry in which trees are
cut during the dormant winter season and allowed to regrow on rotations of
5-20 years, producing an abundance of straight, fast grown poles typically
used for fencing, fuel, furniture, basketry and construction.

Through both lecture and hands-on woodland work, this two day intensive course
will focus on the history and practice of coppice woodland management in the
UK, the potential for its development in the northeastern United States, wood
science and species selection, and the conversion of coppiced poles into
useful products.

Fieldwork will include charcoal production, chair making and green woodworking
techniques, fence construction and coppice establishment and maintenance.

Mark Krawczyk, who will lead this class, is a permaculture designer, chair
maker and natural builder and resides in Vermont’s Champlain Valley.

Commuter: Sliding Scale $150 - $250 (includes lunch both days)
Residential: Sliding Scale $200 - $300 (includes lunch both days, dinner

Cities are rich centers of culture, diversity and exchange. Unfortunately,
they also produce pollution and drain resources from rural areas. Join us for
a weekend focused on redesigning cities to create vibrant urban ecosystem

In these workshops, we will explore downtown Ithaca and the idea of
"ecological cities." We will delve into many topics, including urban
gardening, composting, tree pruning and natural earth plasters through
hands-on projects in a local neighborhood.

Saturday evening we will camp out in nearby woods overlooking the cityscape.
All weekend we will discuss challenges, ideas, and solutions for making our
environments more livable. Join representatives of local organizations,
designers, and urban residents from throughout the northeast to discuss how
permaculture is applied to the needs of city life, including transportation,
city forestry, food security, economics, and justice.
