You need a referent here: compared to what? Diesel has more energy per pound than gasoline and needs less refining from crude oil, so it's more efficient than gasoline. Certainly more efficient than converting coal to gas fuels. More efficient than coal or oil converted to electricity. So, what's it not as efficient as?
