It is true that the early Catholic Church became more like the empire that
oppressed it. However, Pope John Paul, the one who just died not too long
ago, did apologize about the crusades, the inquisition, and other
in-the-name-of-Christianity violence. We have to remember that the true
christian disciplines of abstinence that the Catholic Church and other
churches teach are very beneficial to the environment and each other. By
abstaining from sex, food, and other questionable pleasures or work, we
reduce the amount of destruction done to the environment and to each other.
The Catholic church or any other church is not perfect and is not in the know
as much as the permaculture movement, but the church does reform. It has
reformed since the times of Luther, and it will continue to be reformed.
