INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS WARN AGAINST APPROVING UPOV,
BUDAPEST AND PLANT VARIETY LAWS

..."As regards agriculture, the imposition of the UPOV Convention and of
national plant variety (seed) laws based on it seriously threaten
peasant agriculture, food sovereignty and peasant seeds in Latin
America," says Camila Montecinos of GRAIN, Chile. "More concretely, UPOV
and national plant breeders' rights regimes lead to genetic erosion
through their requirement for uniformity, transform the socio-economic
living conditions of peasants and Indigenous Peoples, impede the free
exchange and use of peasant seeds and undermine traditional knowledge,
leaving our agricultural biodiversity in the hands of large corporations."
