Planet Drum Foundation
in collaboration with Friends of Sausal Creek present:

INTRODUCTION TO ALAMEDA COUNTY BIOREGIONAL ECOLOGY WORKSHOP
(partially funded through a grant from the Alameda County Community
Stewardship Program)

An inspiring two-day weekend field immersion workshop conveniently
located in the Sausal Creek restoration area of Dimond Park (Fruitvale
Avenue at Lyman entrance) in Oakland. A wholistic ecological approach
to identifying and understanding Northern California's unique climate,
weather, soil, landforms, watersheds, and native wildlife. Emphasis is
on observation of natural characteristics, discussing
inter-relationships, and practicing hands-on learning techniques in
the beautiful environment along Sausal Creek.

Join Planet Drum Director Peter Berg, author of Discovering Your
Life-Place, and A Green City Program for the San Francisco Bay Area &
Beyond, and innovative environmental educators Paul Belz and Chrystal
Schreck for an original and exciting program unlike any other offered
this year. This is a must for learning about and illustrating what
makes our bioregion distinct from any other on the planet. We begin at
the Sausal Creek restoration area in Dimond Park at 10AM on Saturday
and Sunday mornings. Bring a bag lunch, good walking or hiking shoes,
and work gloves (optional). You will participate in:
You will:

* Create bioregional maps of your own life-place.
* Explore native habitats that coexist with urban surroundings.
* Undertake new environmental teaching exercises.
* Acquire skills to share with students, colleagues, and friends.
* Engage in restoration activities.
* Obtain indispensable take-home materials

The Sausal Creek Watershed encompasses 2,656 acres. The headwaters of
the Creek arise in the Oakland Hills and it flows through the city,
discharging into the tidal canal that separates the island of Alameda
from Oakland and ultimately flows into San Francisco Bay. For
approximately half its length, Sausal Creek forms a lush, seemingly
natural riparian corridor, unique in this highly urbanized area, while
the remainder is culverted or channelized. It is home to a diverse
assemblage of plants and animals. Recent surveys have catalogued over
250 plant species and 200 bird species inhabiting this riparian
corridor and uplands.
