Growing your own food has so many benefits. The bio-intensive method, which
is being used all over the world, is the most complete system, and is
designed to be used for even those with very limited resources. Anyone can
grow not only a complete diet for themselves, but also grow thier own
fertilizers, compost, etc. It does take practise and experience! This
class is just what is needed for beginners and intermediate gardeners.

The Sustainable Vegetable Garden: a Backyard Guide to Healthy Soil and

Gardening Techniques from the Best-selling How to Grow More Vegetables.

Topics we'll cover:
First Class:

a.. Making compost
b.. Growing your own compost crops
c.. Starting Seeds: mixing your own flat soil; sowing a flat
d.. Nurturing Seedlings: transplanting to a larger flat
e.. Choosing a site and laying out a bed

Second Class:

a.. Choosing gardening tools
b.. Preparing a garden bed: double-digging
c.. Testing and amending your soil
d.. Understanding plant spacing, layout, & companion planting
e.. Watering methods and frequency
f.. Planning the garden year

In this hands-on class, we'll double-dig and plant several garden beds at
Red Rock Elementary School. The plants will then be cared for and harvested
by the students for their education and enjoyment. During the class, you'll
be physically involved in every step. Learn with your neighbors so that you
can form a garden support group to continue your learning when the class
ends.

What is BioIntensive? A method developed by John Jeavons through 30+ years
of research on how to grow a complete diet sustainably in the smallest
possible space.
