i have not started to try it, yet, but i've read about (and had
second-hand accounts of) a 3+ tier grey water filtering system.

tier 1 is simply a container to stop splash errosion. the water pipes into
the box, hits the wall and then goes out the next pipe.

tier 2 is a sand filter. the grey water pipes into the bottom of the
container. the meeting place of the pipe and the container has a fine wire
mesh to keep out clogs. the container is partially filled with sand. the
out-pipe is located at the top of the container. the sand filters out
solids. tier 1 must be above the out-pipe of tier two, for gravity's sake.

the third tier is a large bathtub. the pipe enters one side (again, with a
filter) and fills the tub. the tub is filled with gravell and water-garden
plants. you want to choose plants to filter out the things that you
believe to be in your water.
