I've been experimenting with plain boiling water and it seems to be
quite effective on non-grassy weeds, and some grassy ones if they
are small (this in our gravel driveway which is now difficult to
distinguish from the "lawn"). I don't know if steam-cleaners (these
are the ones for carpets, right?) would get hot enough to be
effective, as they would be designed not to soften synthetic carpet
fibers.

With salt, I'd be worried about it leaching off into surrounding
garden areas.

I'm doing the newspaper underlayment too - how long did it take weeds
to show up?

Vinegar is another one I'll experiment with once it's a little dryer.
In theory, it will acidify things, so it would be bad near gardens,
but good on paths and driveway to prevent future weeds, *if* it
doesn't just leach off - anyone know? Sprayed on, it will kill (some)
weeds but needs to be full strength.
