Dear sanetters,
The American Aluminium company ALCOA is going to build a big aluminium
plant in East Iceland. To get the power to this plant a big hydropower
plant will be built. It will have a dam of 200 - 300 m and the resorvar
will be about 70 sqkm big in area. Huge rivers will be taken and harnessed
in this power and a big canyon will be filled with water (our Grand
canyon). There are no bodies in Iceland that have the monney which is the
background for power to resist the power of the energy company and the
power of the giant ALCOA. The environmental assessment was negative and the
Icelandic Planning agency was against this with other research bodyes like
the Soil Conservation service of Iceland. Please look at the following
website where you can see photos of this area, you can judge for yourself
the value of the land that is going under water, and you can send your
protest to ALCOA and the Icelandic government. Anyway there are many
beautiful pictures on that site of a vanishing land.
