Depends on the particular composting technology being used as well as the degree of process control employed. 55-65 degrees C is common for mid- and large-scale aerobic composting, but some in-vessel systems can generate temperatures in excess of 80 degrees.

Maintenance of temperatures >55 degrees for at least 3 days is necessary to enable pasteurisation - this is achieved through ensuring appropriate levels of moisture and aeration and correct carbon:nitrogen ratio.

Check out www.recycledorganics.com (University of New South Wales Recycled Organics Unit web site) for extensive online information on the technical and other aspects of composting, including links to range of other specialist sites.

I read one of your messages on a newsgroup concerning composting, and
I was wondering if you would be able to help me find some
information. I am trying to find out how much heat energy (BTUs) is
produced by a well maintained compost pile. If you know where I
could find this info, I would really appreciate you emailing me back.

Thanks
Shawn Trokhan
