Interesting project! For home-scale gardening, I wouldn't go past my
short (about 18 inches) 3-pronged cultivator/fork/weed remover/soil
aerator - very versatile. For planting out trees or other revegetation
work, the "Hamilton Tree Planter" has got to be a pretty good invention
- it is basically a metal pole with a handle, with a cross bar to put
the foot on to dig the working end into the soil, and the working end
itself is a tapered squarish cylinder designed to match the dimensions
of a standard 2 inch square tube in which the tree etc. is grown. So
remove the plastic tube, tease out the roots, shove the tree planter
into the soil and pop the tree into the resulting root ball shaped hole.
But for the really tough soils, you can't beat a mattock!
