Title: Harold Strub

Harold Strub

A versatile architect with strong communication skills and broad experience in Canada and the developing world--the tropics, the midlatitudes and the Arctic--summarily described as to vocation and avocation. Author of Bare Poles: Building Design for High Latitudes, a guide to designing for people in subarctic, arctic and antarctic regions.

(Updated:14MAR97)

Publications:

  • 1996, Bare Poles: Building Design for High Latitudes. 208 pages, 150+ photos, drawings, tables and maps. Carleton University Press, Ottawa, ISBN 0-88629-278-6.

  • Front cover layout. Blue monotone picture of summer tundra and boy with komatik, family and tent in background.

  • 1992, Swim by an Arctic Fox, Alopex Lagopus, in Alexandra Fiord, Ellesmere Island, Canada. Canadian Field-Naturalist, 106(4).

Practiced at these locations:

Transported by musical genius such as:

Transfixed by writing genius such as:

  • Tracy Kidder: The Soul of a New Machine, House, Among Schoolchildren, Old Friends.
  • Judith Thurman: Isak Dinesen: The Life of a Storyteller.
  • James Gleick: Genius: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman; Chaos: Making a New Science.
  • John McPhee: In Suspect Terrain, Oranges, Assembling California.
  • Jonathan Weiner: The Beak of the Finch.

Two family peaks:

  • Emil Strub, my great-grandfather, designed and built many of the funiculars and cog railways in Europe at the turn of the last centrury. Above Interlaken in Switzerland his Jungfraubahn bores through the Eiger until it reaches the saddle below the peak of the Jungfrau. He invented a cog railway system that is still in use today. I have his pickaxe. It is inscribed "Jungfraubahn Director Strub".
  • Cordelia Strube, my baby sister, wrote the novels Alex and Zee and Milton's Elements to explore her characters' strengths via their weaknesses in straight-from-the-shoulder prose. Harper-Collins published Teaching Pigs to Sing in August 1996.

Four dreamscapes:

  • Nearly inaccessible sections of the Great Wall ruins high above and north of the haze over Beijing, China.
  • White picket fence and green sward at Porsild's scientific station overlooking the icebergs in Disko Bay, Qeqertarsuaq, Greenland.
  • Verandah overlooking Tent Bay and the Atlantic during a tropical storm near Bathsheba, Barbados, West Indies.
  • From the icecap down to the arctic oasis at Truelove Lowland, on foot, Devon Island, Northwest Territories, Canada.

One recommended geophysicist:
