Aloha,

I think it would be very important to announce it to the main permaculture
list with forwardings to other pc lists that exist
(anyone know what those are?). Those subscribers should, in some way, be
brought into the process of deciding on the content, structure
and functionality of the database.

In some way.

In a big way. It was Steve Diver, through his participation in the pc list,
created the forst major
permaculture FAQ, now online at ATTRA; as an example of why the list users
need to be brought into the process.

Content suggestions definitely. Structure external yes;
internal no unless they're going to be part of the tech dev team ('cause
they won't have a clue how to structure data objects, etc.).

How would you know this? Maybe there are other programmers and web developers
in the list.

Functionality wishlists yes; basics I think we already have covered. More
suggestions are OK as long as we don't get distracted by "feature creep"
and so on.

Noone's going to get distracted, John. Let feature suggestions roll to the
max;
make it a permanent activity - the database can/should co-evolve with the
permaculture community at large.

Keeping interesting work on projects behind closed doors sucks big time.
People need to be encouraged to
participate an to think of this database as their very own.

Someone should write up an introduction to the pcplantdb and post it to the
pc list(s). Rich? Stepanie?

A Wiki should be created for the DB to keep people informed about progress.

There is a wiki page for the db in the pcwiki that can be used for the time
being; Rich has added a specs document there:
