The only thing that I would have changed is closing up the bottom boards. See the FAQ for Apiguard question #20.

You could come back with one more treatment or you could pick another method.  While there are no reports of resistance I am aware of, some people have had less success than others.  It may be due to technique, but who knows.  As a chemist, I do think that closing up the bottom of the hive is a big difference.

Were the bees bearding any more than usual in the few days just after applying each of the two treatments?  This is probably a good sign that you are getting high enough vapor levels in the hive.  They really don't like the fumes.

Celeste,

A few questions.

1- Was this a change from before, what were the pre-treatment mite counts? 6-9 pre to 9-15 post, and I can’t remember for Ian’s but more post to the teens.

2- Where did you place the treatment in the hive?  Where was the brood, where was the treatment? Below the super and stores on top of brood in mine and for Ian’s on top of 2 10 frame deeps with brood in the top box.

3- Did you close off the bottom board with entrance wide open or something like this? Screen bottom left open, entrance open except for boardman feeder.

4- Are there other hives in the neighborhood (1-2 miles) what you know of that may be very high in mites? Yes close, but well managed and also getting aqigaurd treatment about the same time.

5. Did you do two full treatments, 2 weeks apart? Yes

Please share suggestions for the next step.  1.5 and 2 wks post end of full time for aqigaurd treatment in two different locations but close (mine and Ian’s), we both had post aqigaurd mite counts in the teens.  Thanks, Celeste
