National Honey Bee Day is August 19th.  OCBA is collaborating with Farmers Markets in Orange County to celebrate honey bees and honey products at the markets. Placards (see photo below) will be made available to market vendors to display with their produce. Each vendor will fill in the blank with whatever produce they are currently offering or produce that they have offered earlier in the season that are either dependent upon or supplemented by honey bee pollination.

Chris Apple is coordinating information tables at the markets. We will have educational information, freebies from Burt’s Bees and possibly others, an observation hive with live bees, and honey. The Chapel Hill Farmers Market is the only market that will allow our members to sell honey from the information table. We will kick off National Honey Bee Week at the Chapel Hill Market on August 12 and wrap up on National Honey Bee Day, Saturday, August 19.

If you would like to volunteer to assist Chris with these National Honey Bee Day events please get in touch with her (see her email above). We need volunteers to distribute placards to vendors and explain their use. Extra bodies at the informational tables to talk about bees and beekeeping would be helpful. And if you are interested in selling your honey at the Chapel Hill Market you will need to be present in person. Please understand that Chris may have to limit the number of volunteers at each market location. We don’t want to overwhelm the markets with more beekeepers than visitors.

Please volunteer to help make National Honey Bee Day a success. We are excited at this opportunity to work with the farmer/vendors of Orange County. We trust that it will be a fun and informative event for the markets and for beekeeping awareness in Orange County.
