Dadant has it for $19.95. Good point about cleaning their legs more than their backs, but the description states "The Bee Gym contains two main types of grooming aids. The first is a taut wire bees use to groom their backs."

I think I'm intrigued enough to add this tool to my IPM strategy. I'll let ya'll know how it goes as summer draws near!

Best,
Doug

Anyone ever try this gizmo as part of an IPM regimen?

Also, how soon should I conduct a sugar shake on two new colonies hived 4 weekends ago, which appear to be thriving after the critical 3rd week out from queen release?

Thanks,
Doug

Hi Doug,

Thanks for posting. Ive heard of it but not seen a video yet. Obviously, fir me i like the idea of multi IPM choices & anything not chemical related(varroa breeding) is a big plus for all of us keepers.

As designed this device is for exposed varroa so im sure you know is only 1/3 of the varroas life cycle. So you are right to say as part of an IPM method. I do like its intent/result of more grooming.

I only have two comments and neither are meant as final judgement. Really the second is a question.

First a cup of powdered sugar sifted over brood nest will cause ALL bees to increase grooming & im sure cost a heck of a lot less. Added bonus of providing a little feed. It like this device are external tools for removing mites.

Second is partly a question. I watched the whole video & only saw the little fingers rubbing the underside of the bees. I never saw a part of this tool rubbing the tops(back of a bee) where i thought varroa spent most of their time hiding from the bees legs. If i understand it correctly varroa are on top & not underneath, so unless i missed something this tool is missing the largest target area where varroa hide.

That would be my only negative comment. I dont know the price either, but im sure its not $10. Id of like to seen a before & after mite drop count as proof the under belly fingers helped.

Not sure if that was helpful or not, but i am 100% for increasing bee grooming.

Marty

Subject: [ocba] Let's get in the garden!
April showers bring... the Hillsborough garden tour this May 20-21st!

The OCBA needs to represent! In addition to partnering with the master gardeners at Gold Park, we need volunteers to show off our OCBA garden, where plants aren't just pretty, they are bee food.

Have you been to downtown Hillsborough recently to check out the OBCA pollinator garden? The catmint is in bloom! The trifoliate orange, our OCBA logo flower, bloomed in March, and is now creating tiny green oranges. And there are a wayward couple of dandelions that we decided to adopt - they are important sources of nectar!

Come share the good word about bees, pollinators, and pollinator plants on May 20-21. The tour starts at the Dickson House, home of the OCBA pollinator garden. The garden club will be selling plants. As an OCBA volunteer, you can sell your honey & other products of the hive. Reply to me with your availability....the Tour is Sat 10-4 & Sun 12-4.

The garden is a great way to get involved in the OCBA and help the bees even if you aren't actively beekeeping yet / anymore / right now, or to get your friends and family involved in your favorite hobby.

We are also looking for more regular garden volunteers.
This is a one hour commitment, sign up by month, go anytime in the month that suits your schedule. Tasks include weeding and deadheading, and later in the summer, staking things up and then cutting them back. We ask for two volunteers per month. The two can either work together or at different times.

Nearly all of the plants have labels, and are all fully established, so even if you aren't familiar with what is what and where in the garden, you'll have no problems.

Please sign up using this Google spreadsheet, or by replying to me (lucy.wilson AT gmail.com).

And enjoy the photos of the garden from this wet weekend...

Thanks all,

Lucy
