Rick,
That has been considered. They are w/in 2000 feet or the Tennis Club. But there is a stinky, swampy pond on the high school property that I assume the CHS bees use. There was an earlier pesticide kill at CHS affecting one hive. It did not kill the colony, but weakened it. It has been supplemented with brood from the healthy hive and we are feeding both hives. Unless there is another kill Don Hopkins felt it is likely that the weakened colony will be able to rebuild sufficiently to overwinter.

We've been monitoring the CHS hives closely since we learned of the Tennis Club's actions.

John, those bees quite possibly are the club's bees that are located at Carboro High.

There is apparently a swarm of bees at the gas station near Macdonald’s on Churton Street in Hillsborough. The phone number is 919-644-0451. I think they have called an exterminator.

Thank you and have a blessed day!

Bill Lord, a well-known beekeeper & beekeeping consultant in Louisburg (Franklin County), is downsizing and has some production hives for sale this fall. They will be single hive bodies with migratory lids, a choice of solid or screened bottoms and new Russian queens. Bill says he will have the mites well below threshold levels using either formic acid or thymol if needed. These hives will be $200 each.

Bill also will have some medium (6 and 5/8s) supers with drawn plastic frames (Dadant) to sell to for $20 each.

Contact Bill directly at wglord1 AT gmail.com to get on his list.

The Chapel Hill Tennis Club (located in Carrboro near Jones Ferry and the Hwy 54 bypass) is having bee problems - yes they are honeybees. The honeybees are coming to the club's swimming pool for water. They are also congregating around trash cans seeking sugary treats with their yellow jacket friends. Obviously this invasion is upsetting to the non-beekeeping members of the Tennis Club.

Club management recently hired a local pest control company to spray the bees. They will continue spraying on a weekly basis until the problem is solved.

It is possible that the thirsty bees are feral honeybees. In that case no OCBA members may lose bees from managed colonies. But I wanted to give everyone a heads up. If your colonies are in foraging range of the Tennis Club you may see pesticide losses in the coming days. It is most likely too late to change a colony's water source of choice this year. But if your bees are/might be heading to the Tennis Club pool in 2016 you may be able to redirect them in 2017 by providing reliable water sources closer to home.

Julie Grill, one of OCBA's newest members, will be contacting the Tennis Club to suggest ways that they might avoid bee and yellow jacket problems in the future w/o relying on pesticides. As beekeepers, we can also do our part by helping our bees find ways to meet their hydration needs closer to the apiary.
