Todd, Thanks for your insight into bee behavior. I am really grateful that OCBA members with Master Beekeeper expertise are available for us newbees. It's good to know that the bees are unlikely to fill up the empty space in the feeder box with burr comb. That gives me some learning space to experiment with bee behavior - to find out if the bees will uncap honey to move it into brood chambers below. I am reluctant to pull the frames and let the bees rob them out because I worry about the possibility of triggering robbing behavior in the bee yard - especially during dearth. For storage reasons I would like them to clean out those 3 frames. So I will probably try leaving the frames in the feeder box, but scratching off the caps - unless the next time I open the hive I see that the bees are lifting the caps on their own. I hope that uncapping the honey will, encourage the colony to "rob out" their own honey in an enclosed space that they control. If that doesn't work then your #4 'back to the freezer' option looks like a winner (although freezer space will soon become an issue). Your suggested option #2 won't work for me because I work with 2 deeps for brood boxes and the honey/nectar frames are mediums. Beekeepers who decided to work with all mediums are starting to look like geniuses! Again, thanks for your thoughts. Access to knowledgeable bee gurus is what makes the OCBA membership great. -John John Rintoul (919) 414-4071
