Walter,

What is your goal? If you need lots of bees by the end of February, you can feed pollen now. But the nectar flow doesn't start until early/mid April. You'll have to feed lots of syrup to keep all those extra bees from starving. But if your goal is to pollinate early season crops or make & sell early nucs, maybe you do want lots of bees before the nectar flow starts. Look at your goals, the calendar and a bee life cycle chart to plan an appropriate strategy.

For me, I don't feed pollen -- my goals don't require it. I have lots of natural pollen in my area, starting with red maple in January. All beekeeping is local -- your situation may vary.
