Anne,

When I harvest, I use 35 pounds of extracted honey as my estimate for a full 10-frame MEDIUM super. This turns out pretty close as an average; actuals range from about 35 to about 40.

I've never used shallows so I can't give an experienced estimate of those, but they of course will be less. According to the typical foundation sizes on Dadant's website, shallow foundation is 84% of the size of medium foundation, suggesting that a 10-frame shallow will yield something like 29.5 pounds (if my math is right).

I prefer to store my extracted honey in 5-gallon buckets and bottle it as it is ordered. That way I can be flexible as far as whether I bottle in pounds, 2-pounds, quarts, gallons or buckets, as the customers request. A 5-gallon bucket holds 60 pounds of honey. Your 18 shallow frames should give you about 53 pounds, nearly a full bucket.

Weigh your harvest and let me know if my estimate for a shallow is close!
