FYI, the linked article uses a bit of journalistic hyperbole that isn't in the actual PLOS One article (e.g. "their findings may help to explain why honey bee populations are declining" -- the findings do nothing of the kind!). The source article is here: http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0078637 The simple summary is that the conditions & characteristics associated with mating, beyond just the fact of mating, affect the _expression_ of pheromones by the queen. Nothing startling there (Dr Tarpy has published similar findings before), but the experiments demonstrating it are interesting.
