FYI, the linked article uses a bit of journalistic hyperbole that isn't in the actual PLOS One article (e.g. "their findings may help to explain why honey bee populations are declining" -- the findings do nothing of the kind!).

The simple summary is that the conditions & characteristics associated with mating, beyond just the fact of mating, affect the _expression_ of pheromones by the queen. Nothing startling there (Dr Tarpy has published similar findings before), but the experiments demonstrating it are interesting.

Check out this summary of some recent research on pheromone communication by queens.  Not sure if I agree with the conclusion, but it is an interesting bit of basic research.  And the picture appears to show worker laid eggs, not sure what that has to do with the article...
