Who is in charge of the observation hive, if there is one?

That would wonderful....but they'd need to be under glass or somehow enclosed.

We had some beekeepers a couple years ago come to a earth fair and they had a display in glass... The kids loved that booth!

are we getting a bee demonstrator from somewhere?

We’re starting to get things organized for the field trip, and just wanted to touch base with you all. Attached is a flyer the County Commissioners will receive as an update and thought you would be interested in seeing it too. Soon I will develop a layout of where each exhibitor will be located; when I have that finished I will pass it along. Please let me know if you need tables; chairs and a canopy?  Also…I wanted to ask about a possible rain date….would the following Friday would work for you all? (Hopefully we won’t need to use it…but with the way the weather has been lately who knows!)

I’m looking forward to it…

Hello Marabeth,

I have received offers to volunteer from two of our beekeepers, Chris Apple and Valerie Bateman for the Farm-to-Table event on September 27th.  I will continue to try to find a few more volunteers for the event but, at a minimum, I wanted to let you know that we can commit to the event.  Please keep in touch regarding any developments, questions, or requirements as the event nears.

Chris and Valerie, are either of you comfortable with using the observation hive?

Rex;

Alamance County has been hosting a field trip like this for the past 16 years. Last year Orange County staff attended their event and now are planning on molding ours as close as possible to theirs. However… they run their event for two days and serve 800 kids. Our plan to start out slowly with one day and serve 200 kids (or 8 classes). I’ve attached Alamance’s promotional flyer from last year. And at the bottom of the email I’ve inserted some pictures from their event. Also…I would be happy to see who does their beekeeping booth…so you could speak directly to them. Also… Recently I emailed all the Orange County fourth grade teachers to gage their interest and if they would like to attend. Within 24 hours…I had 8 teachers saying “yes” they would love to attend. We also have 1 sponsor willing to help pay for the kids transportation…so now all I need is volunteers willing to demonstrate. I hope you will consider participating!

Here are answers to your questions….

-          Where is the event at?

The event will be held at the Blackwood farm (Corner of 86 and New Hope Road). The is a “land banked” county owned site slated to be a future park. It’s currently not opened to the public…except for special events.

-          What time will it be and when can we be there to set up the booth?

The event is scheduled for 10am-12.  Basically there will be 8 different booths set up with different topics ( poultry, cattle, crops etc…) the students will attend each booth for a talk or demonstration for 15 minutes and then rotate to the next.  I would think arriving at 9am would give plenty of time to set up. And then after the event…we are planning to serve lunch to all the volunteers. ( So I’d say 9am to 1pm.)

-          How many people would you like to have at the booth?

This would be up to you….To me two would be enough.

-          Is there anything in particular in terms of displays that you would like to have at the booth (i.e., photographs, wax display, observation hive, etc.)?

Again I would let you all decide.

-          Are there any specific limitations to what you would like to have available (i.e., live bees, honey, etc,)?

I don’t think have live bees that aren’t contained would be a good idea. However; when the Beekeepers came to Earth Fair they had a glass display of a section through a hive that the kids found very interesting…and although they didn’t specifically bring bees….by the end of the fair there were bees buzzing about.

-          Will parents be present?

1 or 2 for each class (8 classes total). We will have plenty of OC staff on hand. And am looking into having FFA high school students also chaperone.

-          Can volunteers have honey available for sale?

I wouldn’t stop you…but can’t imagine there will be many (besides me and other staff) that will be able to purchase.

Below are a couple of Photos from the Alamance County event.
