Policy for using the honey extractor

Description: The extractor is a hand-cranked radial model and accommodates 9 shallow or medium frames or 3 deep frames tangentially

Associated equipment: 5 gallon filtering system including cappings tank and filters and bucket with gate valve.

The extractor is housed at the home of Volker Mittendorf (1Winnawa Walk, Hillsborough, NC , 27278,. and can be reserved (4 days maximum) at 919 732 9426 (home), 919 402 7619 (cell) or volker.mittendorf AT gmail.com (Email).

The charge is $10 for use of the extractor for up to 4 days for OCBA.  Cash payment or a check made payable to Orange County Beekeepers’ Association should be given to Dick Merritt (OCBA Treasurer) at the next OCBA meeting or mailed to him at 3232 Seven Springs Road, Hillsborough, NC 27278.

Instructions for use:
1)   After uncapping the frame place it in the extractor rack.

2)   Spin at moderate speed for 1 to 2 minutes, then spin again at moderate speed for one or two minutes then faster for 1 minute to remove as much honey as possible. Spinning speed should not be so fast or vigorous to distort the foundation

3)   Allow honey to drain through the open gate through the filter into the bucket below.

4)   The extractor should be cleaned after each use by one of two following methods
  • Place the “empty” extractor and other equipment near your hives so the bees can retrieve the remainder of the honey. Then rinse out any residual honey and wax and spray with a dilute bleach solution (1 part bleach, 3 parts water) and rinse thoroughly.
  • At a coin operated car-wash, use the high-pressure soap setting followed by the rinse setting to thoroughly remove all of the honey and wax from the extractor and other equipment.

A fee of $20 will be charged for failure to clean the equipment.
