Was out yesterday afternoon and spent about 10 or 15 minutes just watching the bees enter and exit the 2 hives we set up on Saturday 04/20.  I was really happy to see lots of bees coming into the hives loaded down with pollen.  I’m hoping this means that they’ve drawn out some comb and are acclimating themselves to the new queens and location.

After checking to see that the queen had been released last Monday. we have not opened the hives—although I have to say I am SOOOO tempted.  I really want to check to see if the queen has started laying but don’t want to upset them or interfere.  Do you think it’s reasonable to check middle of next week or should we wait longer?  I now understand the many times Todd reiterated the need to minimize disturbances to the hive.  Without those warnings I think I would have been checking every day!

We’ve been feeding the bees- but wanted to ask—They’re going through a quart of sugar water a day.  Is that within a normal range???

Also finally answered the questions I had about whether my allergy to wasp stings meant I would also be allergic to bee stings.  After having been stung twice, I have not had to resort to the epi pen!!   Yay!!!!  Hurts but totally manageable.  That’s not to say that this will be everyone’s experience, but I’m happy to report that there is not an absolute correlation between the two.

Thanks,

Nerissa
