Hello OCBA,

I need to make some updates/modifications to both of the events I told you about earlier this week.  Please see below.

Chestnut Ridge Camp and Retreat Center

Geneva told me that she had a consultation with them to help them to figure out what sort of plants may be best to add to their community farm to help with attracting pollinators.  It is my understanding that, in addition to an informal presentation on honeybees as pollinators, they are hoping to attract some of us to help with some planting that morning.  Geneva says that the garden is already very nice and that it should be a very fun event for all involved.

Please remember that there is an opportunity to sell honey at this event.  I believe that I will be able to make it to this one for the presentation and assistance, but I have no honey stores to sell.  Therefore, it would be awesome if someone else interested in making some cash would be willing to come as well.

New Bee Packages

David Bailey sent some emails over the listserv the other day announcing that there had been a change in the dates for package pickup.  I also spoke with David yesterday and have a better idea of what exactly he needs from us.

First delivery will take place on April 12-13.  This is a Friday and Saturday.  David anticipates that the volume of pickups will likely be lower on Friday than Saturday, so, while volunteers would be greatly appreciated on both days, Saturday seems to be the most critical.

The second delivery will be on April 27, a Saturday.  If memory serves correct, the majority of the packages are arriving on this date, so it should be busy.

On both dates, David is hoping to have one or more volunteers be willing to do some demonstrations.  He would like to have installation demonstrations at 11am and noon and a demonstration on lighting the smoker at 11:30am.

David has also stated that he will feed all volunteers.  Please contact either me or David directly if you are able to help.

Please let me know if you can help with any of these events.

Subject: Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Hello OCBA,

There are a couple of upcoming events that I would like to tell you about.  We need volunteers, so please let me know at your earliest convenience if you are interested in helping with one of them.

Chestnut Ridge Camp and Retreat Center

Jessica Carson and Erica Romkema came to speak to us at our March meeting about an event they are planning at the community farm at Chestnut Ridge and we agreed to help them with their event.

The Chestnut Ridge Camp and Retreat Center provides several services for its guests and members, including summer camps, after-school child care, retreat facilities, outdoor education programs, and community farming.  As part of a new grant, they are seeking to adopt a “farmscaping” approach in their community farm.  Farmscaping is a holistic ecological approach to pest management which aims to use specific plants and landscaping techniques to attract beneficial insects while discouraging harmful pests.

Since honeybees are among the beneficial pollinators they would like to encourage, Jessica and Erica have requested a presentation from OCBA as part of an event to kickstart their farmscaping initiative.  The event will be on Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 10am-noon.  They would like us to provide an informal presentation/discussion on importance of bees as pollinators, display the observation hive, and, hopefully, have local honey for tasting/sale.

Chestnut Ridge is located in Efland and their website can be seen here  http://campchestnutridge.org/community-farm/

New Bee Packages

David Bailey has been taking orders for new bee packages this year through his new store, Bailey Bee Supply.  He is hoping to have some volunteers to assist with the package pickups.  Pickups will be on two Saturdays next month, April 6 and April 20.

Please let me know if you are interested in participating in either of these volunteer opportunities as soon as you can.  Hope to hear from you soon.
