Tom Grizzlethen here's another suggestion.
If the bees can't get to that space you may want to place a 4" square of plastic political sign board with the corrugated backing. Party of your choice, no matter. Pack one end of the cardboard with 1/2 teaspoon of crisco just enough to close the holes off. Then drop a teaspoon or so of borax, or diatomaceous earth inside the carboard's other end and then close it off with crisco. Beetles eath thru the crisco, eat the borax and die.Borax and diatomaceous earth will kill bees so be careful.I would consider this a temporary, winter time treatment. May be a good way to keep SHB from overwintering inside the brood nest. Let us all know how your hive holds up with this many beetles killed a day. Learning curve for us all with this pest, new to us.
