I have a good list that I got from a state meeting on pesticides and their varying harmfulness to bees.  I will try to enter that and post it but it may take some time.

Great website, Annallys. The do not seem to include fungicides which are also harmful to bees and other beneficial insects.

Pesticide Action Network is asking people to pledge to support bees by keeping pesticide free environments, with forage, water and areas for wild bees to nest.  Consider visiting the following site, put it on facebook, blogs, ask friends and neighbors to sign up. http://www.honeybeehaven.org/content/take-pledge

I agree Kitty-Blair,

I was thinking that from this or most likely the second meeting we might have a "siting" group voted on or a group of volunteers to go out and look at the 4-5 proposed sites and offer feedback to the group. We'd have to consider the land management practics of the host site for those hives on that site "IF" they were to desire CNG, SUN, weekly access w/o disturbance or annoyance to the host or their neighbors, but also what food & water options are there. I know Elisabeth is good w/ plants but not sure her level of interest at this stage.

two other ideas (one being yours kitty) would be to have the folks who are offering up the sites do a mini hosting "party" (just sounds more fun). They set the date and time and those who can make it do w/o any stress of "I'm free this day..I'm free that day".

the second is a better use of the time and expertise of the "voted in - volunteer" group, but to be accompanied by Geneva...hopefully! She has years of experience in landscaping and is also working on a plant list project here in O.C. So she would be great about spotting food sources for this new groups siting project and maybe also offer her up an extension to her own project in exchange for her time. Now...that being said...she does this for a living so we'd have to check in with her (you) and see if there would be a consultation fee or not because i am not speaking FOR her....just tossing out an idea to tap into a great resource.

Thanks guys....Geneva...any thoughts - ideas - concerns - input from this angle??

cheers,
marty

I like the idea of having gatherings at different places to see what we are working with.

I am about to go to a "weekends only" shift, but don't have a start date yet, so having a get together at our house should probably be pretty soon.  Like within a month or so.

Maybe people who would like ot show off their stuff could just decide on when and issue an invitation?  We don't have to have any particular topic besides "This is  what I'm doing" and talking about bees.

I think potluck snacks sounds like fun, too, but not a requirement.  (This being a way of saying I'd be glad to bring something but am not requiring anyone else to have that inclination.)

Hey Blair,

I think we should all vote on a few sites then do a visit by a selected(voted) group. if the current "desire" or need to be or have CNG status prevails then NO you would NOT ever be allowed to use them. Even just on your hives! Also the land on which the hives are on (all of it) has to comply w/ the "allowed" chemicals for land management. The CNG guidelines are strict but do not extend to your neighbors like to the guy down the road, but do so on the plot where they are hosted. so if that's a deal breaker for you (EVER) OR if you all are Round Up sprayers, etc then it will not work. Whats cool about CNG is they also offer a list of alternatives even for land managment.

Please vist CNG here...

for some background and then let us know once we meet. I am trying to wrap up the last of inquires about a first meeting and will let everyone know by tonight when i'd like to host the first get together. From there we will need to chat about structure, vote on groups or leaders, etc. Kind of a mini OCBA. I guess that would make us OCBA-N..? We'll work it all out.

If you all are looking for a centrally located place, I'm right off of 85/hwy 70 between Durham and Hillsborough (on Lewis' bee map). We're (renting) an old family farm on 40 acres, mostly hardwoods, on an 11 acre lake, abuts the eno river state park on one side and power company land on the other. I have maybe a quarter acre that I can keep mowed that might be alright for bees (morning/midday sun, late afternoon shade). I expect to be at 3 hives total by the end of swarm season.

I'm all about natural, but if, say I couldn't keep mites under control, I would still consider treating with MAQS... No idea if that de-qualifies me as a candidate... I would really like to work with moving things around, changing up equipment/ bee nutrition/etc to see how much good management can help prevent the need for nasty chemicals... Does this resonate with anybody/everybody?

Best,
Blair
