Subject: [ocba] Clarification on the OCBA Natural Beekeeping Proposal

First, let me say that I love the fact that everyone is so enthusiastic about Lewis' proposal. It is great to see folks that are excited about a project such as this. I do have some concerns that I feel like I need to put out there. When Lewis and I discussed this, it was on the heels of a sometimes educational, sometimes rude and snarky email exchange about "chemical free beekeeping" (a term I think has now been deemed ambiguous and misleading). I am of the opinion that, more often than not, divisiveness can be resolved through education and open-minded communication. Enter Lewis' idea for the OCBA to invest $500 to develop a OCBA "Chemical Free" (Natural) Beekeeping bee yard managed by OCBA members to be used to teach and demonstrate best practices of the method to OCBA members (new and old) as well as the community.

Now, of course, if people feel like they want to form a new "group" with leaders and a mission statement and a website and standards and all of that, it is of course their prerogative. That was however not the goal or intent of the grant. We want to foster unity and communication, not create an "us and them" or "natural vs dose-and-spray beekeepers" attitude. It is important that everyone has the opportunity to be exposed to all of the options out there and make their own informed decision about what works for themselves based their own beliefs and unique situation.

So, and I apologize if there was any misunderstanding, let me reiterate the proposal as it was originally conceived:

OCBA would like to invest $500 to develop a OCBA Natural Beekeeping Bee Yard managed by OCBA members to be used to teach and demonstrate best practices of the method to OCBA members (new and old) as well as the community.

There would need to be some sort of guidelines as to what the club would like to see for its investment, perhaps brief monthly progress reports to the club (preferrably in person at the meetings), some seasonal field days, etc. The proposal drafted by the Natural Beekeeping Committee of the OCBA would need to be presented to the club and voted on by the membership.

I look forward to hearing what the committee comes up with.

~Todd
