Subject: beekeeper question

Hello,

My neighbor is Aggie DaCosta (a beekeeper) and she recommended I check with you all about whether a beekeeper might be up for coming to Duke School to talk briefly with a group of 1st graders about bees and beekeeping.  Aggie was kind enough to do that last year, but she's not feeling up to it as of late.  Last year, she brought her beekeeping gear, smoker, a bee in a jar for the kids to do their "observational drawings," and a couple of books.  We also had the kids taste two kinds of honey and vote on their favorite.  Duke School uses a project-based curriculum, where kids delve deeping into topic in lots of ways over a period of time.  Right now, my daughter's class project is on insects of all types.

Let me know what you think!  Please forward this to anyone you'd like.  It's probably a 45 minute activity and Duke School is located in Durham on Old Erwin Road, near 751.

Best,

Kristen Hirsch
