http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langstroth_hive. For those that need a review of "bee space." Instead of the usual ten frames in a shallow, try nine with a nine-frame spacer. Doesn't violate "bee space" and yield is about the same. The advantage is that the comb is a tiny bit deeper, sticks out further, is easier and faster to uncap, you extract nine instead of ten, so less handling. Tempting, but eight leave too much space.

The development of a strain that thrived with eight frames might provide means for instant retirement. Guess you can patent bees along with plants and other biologics but don't know how you'd prevent illegal propagation unless they were some sort of sterile hybrids.
