Hello Beekeepers,
Plans for our field day on July 25th are beginning to gel. I spoke with Colleen Kendrick, president of the Chatham Beekeepers, at the NCSBA meeting in Wilkesboro last weekend. She suggested that our clubs get together for some beekeeping fun sometime soon. I invited them to our varroa field day/ice cream social. Since we hadn't settled on a venue yet, I asked Colleen if she knew any beekeepers in N. Chatham or S. Orange that might be willing to host. Within minutes she found a willing host, Pete Mabie. Pete has 5 hives on his property. Some have screened bottom boards and some have IPM bottom boards so it may be interesting to compare mite loads between those hives.

We will meet at 2 PM on Saturday, July 25th at Pete's place. His address is 155 Shotts Farm Road ( not on mapquest ). From Chapel Hill go South on 15-501 to Cole Park Plaza. Turn right on Manns Chapel Road. Go 1.5 miles and turn right on Shotts Farm Road (gravel road). Go to the bottom of the hill to the white beehive mailbox.

Don Hopkins (and I believe Will Hicks) will be on hand to demonstrate varroa sampling techniques and talk about what we can do to manage them. I'll be handing out swatches of # 8 hardware cloth so that everyone will be able to go home and sample their hives using the sugar shake method. Following that, we'll chill out with some homemade ice cream, shoot the breeze, share varroa war stories, and get to know the Chatham folks. Following that, you are invited to Pittsboro where Don and the Chatham crew will inspect their club hives on the Central Carolina Community College Campus.

My ice cream recipes continue to improve and I hope to bring a respectable batch of blueberry ice cream with some local blueberries that were pollinated by my bees. If you have a churn, fire it up and show us what you've got. If you don't have a churn, bring a topping, some cupcakes, a cooler of water, or other ice cream social gear. Lawn chairs might be good.

This will be a fantastic hands on learning experience for both new and experienced beekeepers.

Cheers,

Lewis
