The discussion of having or not having bees in chapel Hilll/Carrboro is interesting to read.
FYI: The Paris Opera house, downtown Paris, has bee hives located on the roof with bees that fly and pollinate all types of trees, flowers and shrubs in Paris and the surrounding gardens. A beekeeper maintains the hives and collects the honey. The honey is sold in the gift store of the Opera House. I bought some several years ago; it is considered a specialty and very expensive. Maybe we could learn from other cities. Eva

i ran into a similar problem in new york city.
i have a new york state license but its not legal to keep them in new york city. you can get a $2,000 fine. I live in a small suburb of the city so no big deal really.
word around town is that you are only pursued to enforce this antique law (that covers ferrets, caimans, hedgehogs, etc) if public complaints are coming in.
So, i educated my neighbors about bees and wasps (honeybees don't care about summer picnics but yellowjackets do..etc); had pictures of my 4yo daughter next to hive in local newspaper article and store ads; put wasp traps around my garden and showed them brimming with wasps and biting flies and not a single honeybee. BINGO.
don't you just shudder when people call wasps bees?
this is me
