Jack Tapp is undergoing rotator cuff (shoulder) surgery this week and will probably be incapacitated for a considerable period of time.  I’ve asked him to consider providing a list of things that fellow beekeeper friends can do to help him during the upcoming busy spring season.  He won’t be able to do much lifting for some time.  Maybe we can provide some needed muscle and mobility to help him out.

If anyone is interested in helping for a day or partial day from time to time, please get in touch with us.  We’ll pass it along to Jack.  This would be a great opportunity to learn a lot from a very knowledgeable beekeeper, and one who has helped many of us get a good start.

OCBA,
The
Museum of Life and Sciences in Durham has asked if we could do a live beekeeing display for April 12 (see below).  I would love to do this but my family from Alaska will be here so I can not really commit to this.  I checked and the gazebo is in the Orange County storage.  It would need to be taken out, setup and checked for repairs before this date.  Several folks and a nuc of bees would need to be available for the day.  It would be a lot of fun.  Is this something that the OCBA would like to do?  Maybe this could be discussed at the next OCBA meeting.
Thanks,
David

David,

Ok, here is the promised email to explain: Apr. 12 (Saturday), we celebrate the butterfly house anniversary and awakening spring. A bit like bugfest in Raleigh, we try to bring out our bugs to play with and more.

We hopefully will have BASF and BAYER scientists staffing a booth demonstrating their research on bugs and pest control, plan to have EPA do a booth and have asked USDA and the entomology society to set up a display. Music, some local (yard) art  vendors and photographers, and some games related to ‘bugs’ (like dungbeetle roll, roach races, leafcutterant ‘schlepp’ and “pop the aphid’) are part of it too. A family event for our guests (about 1600 or so we had the last few years we did this) that is fun, but with a science angle.

I also asked the Extension Service to advertise their role and resources to our guests. Please let me know if you or some other members are open to the idea to show off some bee keeping skilsl (a real hive?, maybe demonstrate handling of bees etc by redoing our demonstration hive – maybe?!)

Thank you for your consideration.
