Lee,

I suppose this isn't terribly surprising.  In Oregon, 'Jefferson' and others
with the resistance gene from 'Gasaway' may develop small cankers but these
generally don't have stroma and inevitably heal over in 2-3 years.  Any
single dominant resistance gene is susceptible to breakdown, and it is likely
that the strain(s) of the fungus on the west coast are from one or a very few
isolates, whereas there would be much more pathogen diversity and be much
more likely that this single-gene resistance would have already broken down
where the pathogen is endemic.  In this case, you are probably better off
planting varieties such as 'Sacajawea'
which have a high level of quantitative resistance.  This type of resistance
is much more durable (you will get some disease when there is heavy pressure,
but it should be very manageable), and I personally think that 'Sacajawea' has
better flavor also.

I should also mention that anyone thinking of trying these should make sure
they also have a second compatible variety for pollination.

Michael

After a decade or so, I'm seeing quite a bit of blight on my "blight
resistant" filberts, including Jefferson, here in NY's Hudson Valley.

The newest one they are planting out in Oregon, 'Jefferson', is quite good.
This one is mostly being sold for the in-shell market (about 10k acres
planted over the last 4 years).  'Yamhill' is excellent, and is the main one
which Ferrero is contracting with growers to plant because of its flavor and
exceptional kernal quality.  ‘Sacajawea’ also has excellent kernal quality,
but has been less popular because, while it has strong horizontal resistance
to filbert blight, it doesn't have the immunity that the others do.  I have
no idea how any of these would perform in zone 6.

Thinning effect of Sevin depends on fruit size ; best is 8 to 12 mm , and
rate ; anywhere from 5ppm to 20 ppm.FYI we thin with Sevin and NAA
