Maria,
This looks like a pomegranate to me, although I don't know about the petal
count. The ornamental ones have very small fruits. Or perhaps a
Chaenomeles japonica or C. speciosa? The fruit of these does indeed look
like a small apple, and would be sour!

What climate are you in?

Planted seeds in my garden 3 years ago from an unknown small sour fruit that
looked like a crab apple, kind of. My Latvian friend said
it is common there and good for your health. Blossom has 4 petals.
