I normally only see V.arboreum growing on dry, sandy upland sites with acid soils, but there is one place I have seen them that was very different. In Northern Alabama in the Walls of Jerico area near the Tennessee border, they grow abundantly down in the gorge in very calcareous, moist soils. This is the only place I have ever seen any Vaccinium thriving in such soils. I intended to collect seeds from these, but I have not managed to find my way back there at the right time. I suspect these could be good candidates for developing rootstocks.

I believe, from discussions with Dan Hemenway, years ago, that his plan was
to attempt grafting onto existing Farkleberry/Sparkleberry (V.arboreum)
trees/bushes that were already well-established - and evidently 'liking'
where they were growing.
Don't know if Dan still monitors this list, and I've long since lost his
email address(if it were still the same), but he might have some 8-10 yr
trial results by this time - or may be able to just say "It didn't work."

My experience with preferred sites for farkleberry mirror's Hector's - I
usually saw them growing on dry hillsides, on thin, poor soil(well, most of
our farm fit that bill).

Hi Richard,
I tried it but the grafts didn't seem to thrive.  It may be the
rootstock Farkleberry Vaccinium didn't like living on the bottomland.  Here
they are mostly found in very dry spots on the hillsides with excellent
drainage and shallow soil.  We found the Rabbiteye blueberry is more
tolerant of alkaline soil that the northern varieties.
